Formed in London in 1977, The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and 1980s. The band composed and performed music influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz. Considered one of the leaders of the Second British Invasion of the US, Rolling Stone labeled them “the first British New Wave act to a breakthrough in America on a grand scale.” The Police won six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and were inducted into the 2003 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) was their third album and home to a single “Don’t Stand So Close To Me.” A number one record, it won 2 Grammy awards. The title was designed to roll off the tongue and is one of the 500 best albums of all time.
